Houston Car Accident Statistics

Houston is a dense metropolitan area with a steadily growing population. While a boosted population benefits Houston’s economy, more people sadly means more traffic and more car accidents. Given Houstonians have an average commute time of almost 30 minutes, it is something we all see every day.

In 2021, nearly every day someone lost their life on Houston streets, and close to five people suffered a serious injury in a traffic crash.  The Houston Police Department reported 66,988 motor vehicle crashes leading to:

  • Fatality crashes:  327 fatally injured people in 312 crashes
  • Serious injury crashes:  1,595 seriously injured people in 1,394 crashes
  • Minor injury crashes:  7,231 minorly injured people in 5,335 crashes

  • No injury crashes:  126,066 uninjured people in in 42,394 crashes
  • Unknown severity crashes:  22,232 people with unknown injuries in 3,769 motor vehicle crashes

Unfortunately, Houston has some of the most dangerous roads in the U.S. Recent studies found that I-45 in Houston is the deadliest road in America with 5 fatal accidents for every 100 miles. Harris County is even suing the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) over plans to expand the highway.

Harris County, TX Car Accident Statistics

For all of Harris County there were 114,674 reported motor vehicle crashes in 2021 leading to:

Most Common Causes of Car Accidents in Houston, TX

According to the Houston Police Department, almost 60% of accidents were caused by only five negligent actions of Houston drivers. In order of highest incidence, the most commonly cited factors leading to car accidents in Houston in 2021 were:

  1. Failed to control speed – Speeding was cited as a cause of 18,694 collisions in Houston in 2021, or 24.8% of all motor vehicle accidents. Speeding is one of the leading causes of accidents – particularly serious and fatal accidents – because it increases the distance needed to stop and makes it more difficult to avoid obstacles.
  2. Disregarded or ignored stop light or stop sign – Drivers disregarding or ignoring stop signs and lights led to 8,404 collisions (11.2% of collisions).
  3. Failed to drive in a single lane – Driving in more than one lane of traffics was cited as a cause in 7,710 collisions (10.2% of all collisions). This most frequently happens when a driver is distracted, fatigued, hurried, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  4. Changed lane when unsafe – Unsafe lane changes were cited as a cause of 5,334 collisions (7.1% of collisions). These accidents often occur when drivers change lanes without checking their mirrors (particularly when someone is approaching rapidly or in their blind spot), when drivers do not use turn signals, or when two drivers try to enter the same lane at the same time.
  5. Driver inattention – Drivers simply not paying close enough attention to the vehicles and conditions around them led to 2,968 collisions (3.9% of collisions). Driver inattention includes anything that takes your attention away from the road, such as talking on the phone, texting, eating, or adjusting the radio.

Texas Car Accident Causes and Statistics

Texas roads are statistically unsafe. Many factors and behaviors contribute to car accidents, but some are more common than others. Among urban crashes, speeding, following too close, and failure to yield are some of the main issues leading to accidents.

Urban crashes in Texas in 2021 included:

  • 102 fatal crashes caused by disregarding a stop sign
  • 378 suspected serious injury crashes caused by unsafe lane change
  • 62,729 total crashes caused by driver inattention
  • 99,503 total crashes caused by failure to control speed
  • 17,490 total crashes caused by following another car too closely

As you can see, inattention is a massive issue on Texas roads. Also known as “distracted driving,” it’s now one of the leading causes of both injury and fatality crashes. Though texting while driving is illegal in Texas, that does not stop most people. If someone else’s negligent or reckless behavior caused your accident, Thompson Law can help.

Texas Car Accident Statistics

  • One person was injured every 2 minutes 12 seconds.
  • One reportable crash occurred every 57 seconds.
  • There were no deathless days on Texas roadways.
  • Fatalities from accidents increased 15.22% over 2020.
  • 239,539 persons were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2021.

What Should I Do After a Car Accident in Houston?

Being involved in a car accident is an incredibly stressful experience. In the moments after a collision, it can be difficult to think clearly and make sound decisions. However, it is important to take some key steps in order to protect your safety and your rights.

Steps To Take After a Car Accident

  1. Check for injuries:  First, you should check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is seriously hurt, call 911 immediately. Even if there don’t appear to be any major injuries, it is still a good idea to see a doctor as soon as possible.
  2. Get safe:  Next, you should move your vehicle out of the flow of traffic if it is safe to do so, or turn on your hazard lights if you cannot move the vehicle. This will help to prevent further accidents from happening.
  3. Dial 911:  Emergency operators can send police to protect you, take statements, determine fault and causation, prepare a crash report, and contact EMS, if needed. When speaking to the police and other driver, do not admit fault or say you are not injured. Your attorney and doctor, respectively, can help answer those questions.
  4. Exchange information:  Then, you should exchange insurance information with the other driver(s). Be sure to get their name, address, phone number, and the name of their insurance company.
  5. Take photos:  It is also a good idea to take photos of the damage to every vehicle involved in the accident. Once you have taken these steps, you can contact your insurance company and begin the process of filing a claim.
  6. See a doctor:  Seeing a doctor protects your physical health, as well as your injury claim. Even short delays in seeking medical attention opens the door for the insurance company to argue you were not injured in the accident.
  7. Call the accident lawyers at Thompson Law:  Injury claims handled by attorneys typically result in a 3x increase in compensation to injury victims. Thompson Law’s accident attorneys offer FREE CASE REVIEWS, and have a strong track record of excellent results.

What Compensation Can I Seek for a Car Accident in Houston?

In Texas, accident victims have a right to seek compensation after a wreck. A Houston car accident lawyer can offer valuable guidance and help every step of the way. Compensation might cover monetary damages, non-monetary damages, or punitive damages.

Specific compensation can include:

  • Medical bills, past and future
  • Lost wages, past and future
  • Pain and suffering, past and future
  • Physical impairment
  • Lower quality of life
  • Repair and replacement of damaged property

Punitive damages may also be available in certain serious injury or death cases. These damages punish the defendant for reprehensible or despicable behavior. While rarely awarded, they can be very costly to the defendant when they are awarded. A drunk driving accident that results in severe injury or fatality is one example of a case where victims might seek punitive damages and win.
