Brent A. Smith

Attorney

Brent Smith is a personal injury attorney at Thompson Law with more than 25 years of experience representing individuals in complex injury cases. His extensive background in litigation and trial work allows him to effectively advocate for clients facing serious injuries and high-stakes claims.

Born and raised in the south suburbs of Chicago, Brent earned his undergraduate degree in Political Science, English, and History from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he founded the school’s award-winning Mock Trial Program, which continues to this day. He later earned his law degree from The John Marshall Law School (now UIC School of Law), where he participated in Mock Trial, clerked for prominent criminal defense attorneys, and served as a Public Defender in Chicago’s misdemeanor courts.

Brent began his legal career in a diverse private practice that included criminal defense, landlord-tenant law, and plaintiff’s personal injury cases. He also served as outside counsel in Illinois for one of the world’s largest fleet management companies, working alongside railroad attorneys in the defense of FELA claims. Over time, his practice evolved to focus exclusively on representing victims of negligence.

His personal injury experience includes cases involving automobile accidents, bicycle and motorcycle collisions, truck accidents, wrongful death, traumatic brain injuries, pedestrian accidents, premises liability, construction site negligence, and train-related incidents. Brent has tried hundreds of cases to verdict in courtrooms throughout the state of Illinois.

Brent is admitted to the Illinois State Bar, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Outside of his legal practice, Brent enjoys traveling with his family, riding roller coasters with his daughter, dining out, and following his favorite team, the Chicago Bears.
